Frist Links Gays to Prostitutes & Drug Dealers

Yesterday, Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) declared all out war on GLBT Americans by endorsing an amendment to the US constitution that would ban gay marriage. This is extremely serious folks as many of us think this amendment could actually pass.

Senator Frist told ABC's "This Week" that he "absolutely" endorsed amending the constitution because he feared last Thursday's US Supreme Court decision (declaring anti-gay sodomy laws unconstitutional) could now open people's homes to "prostitution" and "illegal commercial drug activity"

Woo hoo! They should go for it. I mean, the constitutional amendment.

For one thing, it doesn't hurt queer people. It's not like any rights we have would be taken away. Since we have nothing to lose in the first place, any public debate arising from the proposal for the constitutional amendment would be extra opportunities to raise awareness about the queer issues.

Any proposed constitutional amendment must be ratified by 38 states before it is adopted, which means we'll only need to defeat it in 13 states. This seems perfectly doable. And even if any such amendment actually gets ratified, history would judge it as a grave mistake for the American democracy, as it does the "3/5 of a person" clause. History is clearly on our side.

When ERA died, so did the second wave of feminism. Perhaps we can end the Religious Rights' momentum by defeating this constitutional amendment.

And "yes" and "yes" for prostitution and drugs! Maybe this is a good opportunity for gay and lesbian leaders to express support for prostitutes' rights and opposition to the "war on drugs"!
